Pondering New Years during the pandemic...
In a recent article in the New York Times, Jenann Ismael, a philosopher of physics at Columbia University, said "Before, new years were landmarks in progress of a story that was unfolding. Now it feels like lost time, waiting to get back to our stories."
These words struck me so sadly, ignoring all the living we are all doing on the way "back" to our stories. The pandemic IS the story! How are we embracing this unique period of time? The unique challenges? The crushing losses? The differing opinions? Isn't this where our humanity lies? Finding strength and passion and forgiveness and love where we never knew it existed?
Maybe it's the optimist inside of me, planted there long ago by my parents, but I think it is the proverbial apple cart being upset by the pandemic that gives us this unique opportunity to freshly choose what direction we want to go, how we can help best during this time, who is most important in our lives, and what matters most to us.
We get to choose how we write our own chapters
Happy New Year to you all, and happy writing!
