Summer is at hand! Happy Father's Day to my amazing father, my incredible husband, and to all the fathers and father-figures in our lives. Also this month: World Continence Week from June 21 to June 27, 2021. This is a health campaign run by the International Continence

What's new at My Pelvic Therapy?
For World Continence Week, I researched different organizations around the globe to see who had the highest quality information for people struggling with bladder control issues. The winner by far is an organization called the National Association for Continence, whose mission is to improve the quality of life of people with incontinence, voiding dysfunction, and related pelvic floor disorders, for both women and men.
Not only do they have an excellent website, newsletter, and patient forum, but they also recently launched an informational Pelvic Floor Health Center. This month I reached out to the organization, and I'm excited to announce that I will be partnering with them to contribute
content and help in other ways to further their mission. I'll be sure to share new articles as they go live 😊

Tummy "Tucks"
The deepest of our four abdominal muscles is called the transversus abdominis, and it is one of the pelvic floor's most powerful allies. Its strength is crucial for good core and pelvic floor control. This exercise is a great way to activate this often weak muscle:
- Start by sitting in good, tall posture with your feet firmly on the floor. Let your tummy fully relax.
- Now, "tuck" your tummy by drawing your lower tummy inward; hold for a count of 5; remember to continue to breathe.
- Relax your belly fully, for a count of 5
- Repeat for 10 repetitions, twice per day.
(Tip: Focus on moving your tummy, not your spine.)
(Remember: it is important to check with your healthcare practitioner BEFORE starting any new exercise program. If you are unsure if you are doing this exercise correctly or have any pain, stop and discuss with your healthcare practitioner, or
schedule a virtual appointment with me for help.)
What's new from around the Web?
This is a study of 302 pregnant women in their 3rd trimester; nocturia (voiding at night) & urgency isn't surprising, but the level of bladder pain, nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting), & straining is. This link is not for the light-hearted; it is a scientific article that takes an in-depth look at incontinence in men. It was published just this past April, so it is an excellent and up-to-date summary of managing leakage. It acknowledges that leakage in men is often neglected, and discusses how it can dramatically affect one's quality of life. This research article also covers fecal incontinence,
something that unfortunately is talked about even less than bladder leakage.
